Introduction to my portfolio

Since the discovery of antibiotics there has been the fear of bacteria becoming resistant to them. When bacteria become resistant we cant treat bacteria the same way as we have before. We are constantly combating this resistance with more powerful antibiotics and are searching for new types of antibiotics.

Although we are at battle with mutant strains for bacteria, we are also trying to educate people with what antibiotic are designed for and how to properly use them. With the help of Josiah Nelson, we were able to conduct a survey on the campus of North Dakota State University to see what people really knew about antibiotics.

Prior to the survey being conducted Josiah and I had to come up with the questions that would be on the survey, prepare the survey, distribute the survey and collect all completed data. Josiah and I split up into two groups to distribute the survey. By doing so we were able to survey more people than if we did so as one group. The survey was voluntary and confidential. After all data was collected we compiled our results and graphed them. The only limitations observed in this study were the possibilities of botched results from such a small sample size. The survey showed how much people really know about antibiotics and the complications they can have when treating bacterial infections.

This major project fulfilled a requirement for an assignment in English 324. The major project was possible due to previous assignments throughout the course. With project proposal, progress reports and the final major project, I was able to utilize and use a variety of communication methods, some of which I was familiar with and other which were new to me, to communicate with a wide range of audiences. Learning about how to write project proposals, annotated bibliographies, and article reviews has really helped me appreciate just how important scientific writing can be. I worked with another individual, Josiah Nelson, on this project, most of which would not have been possible with out his help. Working with Josiah has helped me to understand how scientists work together to get a project done.

The portfolio includes a project proposal, article review, an annotated bibliography, a progress report, two reading responses, and a final project.

Documents in my portfolio

Proposal: The project proposal outlines the parameters for the survey, and the importance of the survey.

Article review: The article review is one example of a survey that was conducted in New York City and was used to help guide my survey.

Annotated bibliography: The annotated bibliography contains ten different sources intended to give background information about antibiotic resistance.

Progress report: The progress report that is included was used as a tool to help keep our survey on track.

Reading response 1: Two reading responses were also included as a means to show my opinion on antibiotic resistance.

Reading response 2

Final project: The final project summarizes the results of the survey. It contains an abstract, introduction, material and methods, results, discussion board, and a works cited. Josiah was then able to makes graphs of the data that was collected.
