Introduction to my portfolio
A look at current MRSA rates in the Midwest: Are they increasing or decreasing? This project was for English 324, Writing in the Sciences, and an online course through North Dakota State University. Objectives for this course included the ability to communicate effectively in a variety of contexts and genres, use a variety of communication skills, to integrate knowledge and ideas in a coherent and meaningful manner, to manage sophisticated writing and development of a research project, to understand a variety of scientific genres, their typical structures, uses, and functions in the scientific community and in the public, to write about science clearly and with understanding, adapting content for a public audience, write clear and correct prose and cite sources using standard citation practices. Structure in the course included regular reading assignments and structured phases of project development, cumulating into a project website put together by Dale Sullivan, the course instructor. The development of the website was through the participation of all students in the class. My contribution to the website was an individual study on the MRSA rates in the Midwest in an attempt to determine if they are increasing or decreasing.
In the individual developer pages, you can see how our work developed into our final projects. On my page you can view various stages I took.
The first item in my page was the proposal I submitted to Professor Sullivan for my project. Once I obtained permission to conduct my study, I provided a review of one of the articles I would be analyzing for my project. This review displayed an introduction into the type of research articles I would be included in my project and obtaining my information from.
Additionally, I provided an annotated bibliography of all of the articles to be used in my study. This purpose of this bibliography was to provide an introduction into the articles I was using, as well as to show that all articles would be relevant to my study.
A progress note on my study was also submitted to provide Professor Sullivan information on how my study was progressing and addressing issues I had run into and how I proposed to solve them.
The next two entries were responses to an assigned reading, “The Antibiotic Paradox” second edition by Stuart B. Levy, M.D. (2002). These reading assignments helped me gain a better understanding of the affects of the use and over use of antibiotics in our society. The reading responses showed my understanding of content and provided me with ideas for my research projects.
The final entry is my final project. As I mentioned, my project was an independent study. Through the literature reviews and information obtained from the Minnesota Department of Health and North Dakota Department of Health I was able to put together a study in IMRAD format with the project developed in APA format. I was then able to submit the project for peer review.
