Walks-runs
from downtown hotels:
- Island
Park (short walk). Walk south on Broadway, past tracks, down gentle hill
to Island Park. There is a walking path through the middle, extending beyond
the dead end on Broadway.
- River
Walk South.
Walk east from hotels on 1st or 3rd Street,
depending on hotel. You will find an asphalt cycling/walking path
alongside the west side of the river. Walk south on this path under
bridges, continuing south as far as three miles to Lindenwood
Park. Just inside Lindenwood Park, you will find
a footbridge that crosses into Gooseberry Park in Moorhead. If you want to
extend your walk, taking this bridge opens up another half-mile loop.
Staying on the path and going further into Lindenwood
will provide another half mile path in one
direction. This entire walk is on a pleasant, quiet path in a park-like
environment.
- River walk North with Moorhead loop. Walk east
from hotels on 1st or 3rd Street, depending on
hotel. You will find an asphalt cycling/walking path alongside the west
side of the river. Walk north until the path turns to a new concrete path.
Follow it through a community gardens area and a wildflower area
underdevelopment. You eventually come to the end of the path at a quiet
street near Oak Grove School. Turn right (east), walking a block or two,
and you will come to Oak Grove Park. Keep turning to the right (heading
south east) as you walk in the park. Eventually, you will come to an open
field area near the south side of the park, where you should turn left
(east). If you do, you will come to a footbridge that crosses into
Moorhead. Walk south along this path. You will pass the Broken Ax Pub, the
Heritage Hjemkomst
Interpretive Center, and the Central Mall on your left, even though you
stay in a park-like environment for most of the walk. Continue south under
bridges, past a rapids area on the Red River (flows north). You will come
to a floating footbridge just south of the rapids. Cross back to Fargo and
follow the path north under bridges back into the downtown area.
- To
NDSU. The walk to
NDSU from downtown takes about 20-30 minutes depending on your pace. Walk north on Broadway past MeritCare Hospital. You can walk on quiet side
streets, heading north and west, until you come to NDSUÕs main gate at 12th
Avenue north and University Avenue. You will have to cross one fairly busy
street on the way: 10th Street, a one-way headed north. The
Alumni Center is north on University one block from the main gate on the
east side of University.
