The Fifth Commandment

The fifth commandment is:
Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you. Exodus 20:12

What does honor mean?

  1. If someone receives an "honor," what does that mean?

  2. When we change "honor" from a noun to a verb, what does it mean "to honor" someone?

  3. What does "honor" seem to mean in this verse? "The Lord declares . . . Those who honor me I will honor, but those who despise me will be disdained." I Samuel 2:30

  4. Notice that "despise" and "disdain" are used as words that mean the opposite (antonyms) to honor. What do these two words mean? What does it mean, in modern slang, to "dis" some one?
